HOLLY — Traffic resumed on Rood Rd Sunday afternoon after two local residents who recognized each other while driving in opposite directions finally exhausted every available topic of conversation, ending a roadside discussion that had occupied the only two reasonably drivable portions of the dirt road for nearly three hours.

Witnesses said the encounter began shortly after 9 a.m., when the drivers stopped beside one another to exchange a quick “How’ve you been?” The conversation soon expanded to include children, lawn mowers, somebody they both vaguely remembered from high school, road construction, property taxes, and a detailed update on a mutual acquaintance neither had spoken to since 2017.

Approximately 45 minutes into the closure, one driver reportedly announced that he was “gonna grab a coffee real quick,” temporarily leaving the scene before returning with two large cups and parking in his original position. Officials said this eliminated any remaining possibility that the obstruction was accidental.

“I figured they’d wrap it up once the cars started stacking up,” said longtime resident Steve Latchford, who spent 38 minutes waiting behind them. “I thought about going around, but the ditch didn’t seem worth getting involved with. Then I saw the coffee come back and realized we were in this for a while.”

By noon, several motorists had turned around, one delivery driver had rerouted through town, and a third resident had pulled alongside the conversation long enough to contribute information about a guy named Mike. The original pair later told witnesses they found Rood Rd preferable to meeting inside Tim Hortons, citing better natural light, free parking, more privacy and the ability to remain seated in their vehicles.

Traffic began moving again at 12:07 p.m. after both men agreed they really ought to get going and promised to catch up again soon. The Holly Tim Hortons is reportedly considering spreading several tons of gravel across its lobby in an effort to remain competitive.
